Rhyme & Reason Records: a women-owned independent label based in New Jersey.

Rhyme & Reason Et cetera: tailored solutions for creatives.

For more than a decade, Emmy Black has been a tireless advocate for smart, idiosyncratic, fearless musicians – artists whose voices may not fit perfectly on mainstream playlists, but who deserve to be heard nonetheless. As an A&R person and digital marketing director at the legendary (and famously offbeat) Hoboken label Bar/None, Emmy signed The Front Bottoms, Ezra Furman, and Emperor X.  She assisted Ben Kweller in the development of his imprint Noise Company.  She worked as client relations manager at The Orchard, a digital distribution firm with a deep catalog of independent acts.  And as the founder and chief of her own Rhyme & Reason Records, she’s championed a deep roster of one-of-a-kind artists with singular perspectives, including Pronoun, Kid In The Attic, Red Baraat, and Mr. Flannery.  Emmy lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

To say that Ann Marie Augustus is a fire starter is no overstatement: she’s spent her career sparking new projects, including as an operations executive for a clean energy technology startup. She now brings that heat to Rhyme & Reason Records and the not-altogether-different world of showbiz.  Ann Marie specializes in start-ups – assembling teams, organizing enterprises, and building frameworks in which innovators thrive. Having launched Rhyme & Reason Records with Emmy Black, Ann Marie brings a commitment to transparency, an open mind to new ideas, and a broad and nuanced view of the business landscape.  Ann Marie grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey, and met Emmy while swimming at the Jersey Shore. She’s proud of the fact that Rhyme & Reason Records is a female-owned and operated label.
